Tuition is given in the necessary skills needed to become a competent pianist and instruction is given in all aspects of technique and interpretation. Pianists work from books and other materials under tutorial guidance, working at a pace that is comfortable for them. Tuition in music theory is given, as this enables pianists to read and write music with fluency, accuracy, familiarity, and with understanding. Examinations are available in both practical and theoretical subjects for those who require them. For pianists, these consist of eight graded exams (Grades 1 - 8) followed by diploma. All these examinations can be taken under Michael's experienced tutelage. Exams, however, are not compulsory: learning simply for pleasure is always encouraged and supported. Enjoyment of the lessons and learning to play are the most important aspects of piano tuition.

In teaching the piano, all styles are acknowledged, and training is a mixture of learning pieces, practising various aspects of technique, music interpretation, musicianship skills, and learning music theory. Pianists have their lessons using the piano in the tutor's home teaching room.

When learning the piano, or any instrument, regular practice to build and acquire musical skills - technical, emotional and interpretational is essential in order to make progress and gain musical and personal satisfaction. A piece of piano music is more than a series of notes in a rhythmic framework or musical structure. As well as note accuracy, students should aim for good tone and phrasing along with appropriate musicality. When first learning a piece, it is good if expressive details can be included as early as possible as it is more difficult to add these expressive indications at a later stage. Whilst practising a piece of piano music, rather than a sole concern for accurate notes and rhythms, a small amount of time spent focusing on technique can produce enhanced results with the development of pianistic and musical skills, thus in turn increasing the pianist's enjoyment and reward.

When I was about 8 years old, I took piano lessons for a short time. Unfortunately, homework increased and I had to stop my lessons.

Now I have children of my own and recently decided I would love to take up the piano again - just to enjoy playing! I searched the internet for good quality tutors in my own area and found Mike's website. Mike, his experience, qualifications, enthusiasm and great testimonials inspired me! I gave him a call and I was booked in for an introductory lesson!

I feel very fortunate to have found such a wonderful tutor in Mike. He is very calm, patient and enthusiastic person and teaches step-by-step at a pace he knows you are comfortable with. Mike is a positive teacher and gives lots of encouragement. Even after only a short time of having lessons I could play pieces that were recognisable tunes.

Although I was quite nervous at first, being an adult beginner, Mike put me at ease straight away.

I thoroughly enjoy going to my piano lessons once a fortnight – maybe I will want to take an exam one day!

Dr Michael Spacie tutors me for Piano. I enjoy and look forward to each lesson I have. I feel I have progressed quickly and I am now more confident with music. He makes everything very simple and easy to follow and is extremely patient.

I have learnt more from his lessons than I ever expected to and I can read and follow music. Michael is extremely good at what he does and is a really fantastic teacher.

Abigail C.  (Student)

Music has been part of human society for thousands of years and I believe it to be an integral part of the learning process that all people should experience. To me, it is as important as maths and science and should be revered for the qualities it possesses.

Although I began lessons with Dr. Spacie some years ago, I stopped attending as my teenage years swallowed me up, but the passion I had felt for music and the sheer devotion Michael had conveyed for the subject stayed firm in my mind.

Whilst browsing the internet I found Michael's website where I read through the testimonials he had received from students. After I absorbed the outstanding reviews, I couldn't wait to book my first lesson. Contacting Michael was easy and a very pleasant experience.

I have returned to the piano with renewed enthusiasm and have found that the skills acquired from my original lessons with Michael (well over a decade ago) are still sat solid in my memory, and if that's not the mark of an amazing tutor I don't know what is. In general, I am quite a nervous person and find it difficult to relax around people; however, when I attend my lessons with Dr. Spacie I feel free and at ease to be open about my opinions and express myself clearly. My lessons are not only helping me to be attuned with music, they are also helping me to develop myself personally, which is to my delight.

The quality of the learning environment is wonderful and very relaxed, and I feel grand sat in front of Michael's piano even though I can relatively only play a few pieces. I can't begin to describe the feeling of accomplishment that learning to play an instrument can bring to you - and it branches out into all aspects of your life. There is nothing I've experienced that is more rewarding or enriching.

Michael is such an enthusiastic person, that I can't help but feel like I'm sat in a concert hall performing the most intricate composition. Michael makes me feel, without a doubt, capable of one day achieving the standards of a fantastic pianist. If you have a genuine love for music, I can't imagine a better environment to learn in, or tutor to be directed by.

I have a lot to say and all of it positive. I am completely addicted to music again, and can't believe I left it so long to restart. Many thanks to Michael for being an inspiration to me, and I hope to be seeing a lot of him in the near future.

I like to go to my piano lessons because it is really fun and Dr Spacie helps me to read music and play the piano. I love to play the piano and I really enjoy the books that I learn from. Dr Spacie is a brilliant piano teacher and I look forward to my lessons every week.

Grace Wilkinson

Our daughter Grace started her piano lessons in the summer of 2011 and we are delighted with her progress so far. Under the superb tutelage of Dr Spacie she has already began to demonstrate a solid understanding of music and play with confidence. She thoroughly enjoys her lessons and looks forward to them each week.

Dr Spacie tailors each lesson to the individual, supporting and nurturing their musical ability in a kind, patient manner. His ability to explain the fundamentals of music to the younger student is outstanding; this coupled with his calm manner makes each lesson extremely enjoyable and progression swift.

The tuition material used is ideal for the young beginner making lessons and homework both fun and rewarding. Grace is developing into a confident, competent young pianist and we would recommend Dr Spacie to anyone of any age whose aim is to play the piano with a strong musical knowledge and most important of all, to enjoy it.

Hannah Lockwood (Student)

Since starting lessons in April 2010 I have learned a lot with Michael. When I started I couldn't read music, but Michael taught me an easy way to do it. I feel I have grown a lot in confidence and also feel that I can play much better pieces. Doing music theory has also helped me to play a lot better the music of different genres. I really enjoy playing the piano.

Michael Barton (Student)

As an adult beginner, I felt very apprehensive before my first lesson, but Michael quickly put me at ease. He has a positive, supportive teaching style as well as a clear enthusiasm for his subject which he passes on to his students. I am pleasantly surprised by the progress I have made and am glad that I finally decided to begin piano lessons.

Suzanne P. (Teacher of English)

I decided to take up piano lessons after giving up a few years ago. Although I kept up my playing of the piano because it did mean so much to me in the first place, I just knew that I wasn't reaching my full potential without having professional teaching. So realising this, I started checking ads in the Yellow Pages looking for ones where you could, if you wanted, gain certificates for graded exams which I have never been offered before.

One particular ad did sound just right for what I was looking for: Dr Michael Spacie. Determined to resume lessons I got in touch and explained my previous tuition experiences in piano playing. Dr Spacie invited me to come along with my books of piano music to show what playing ability I had. On doing so, I established that my playing technique was suffering without professional help. With my lessons arranged fortnightly around my job, I am now making much progress, gaining experience and acquiring new techniques to put into my playing.

I have achieved Grade 2 Practical Piano exam and Grade 2 Theory of Music exam with Distinction.

Alan Sawyer (Carer)

I initially started lessons with Mike in 1991. I had an electronic keyboard and then progressed onto an upright piano thereby fulfilling my childhood dream of playing the piano. Mike's guidance, encouragement and patience enabled me to pass some practical exams.

To improve in your pianistic ability, practice is essential and due to other commitments this soon was a struggle, so it was side-stepped. However, I was successful with my theoretical studies eventually gaining the upper grades in music theory achieving Trinity College London (now Trinity Guildhall) Grade 7 Theory of Music exam with Merit.

I stopped having lessons after 5 years with Mike in 1996 and the piano was sold – a decision that was later regretted! In 2011 I was offered another chance of owning a piano and leapt at the opportunity.

I managed to track Mike through his website and have now resumed my lessons. Unfortunately, I am like a beginner again but know with Mike's tuition and a lot of commitment on my part I will soon improve. The pride I feel at playing even a simple tune is fantastic and my enthusiasm hasn't dwindled over the years. I don't want to take any more examinations, but merely improve my skills on the piano and with Mike's calm, patient teaching and encouragement, I am sure I will gain in musicianship.
