Michael Spacie began piano lessons at ten years of age. He quickly progressed through piano and theory examination grades developing as a musician as well as passing exams. At eighteen years of age and receiving tuition from Sybil Pentith who was the then music teacher at Thomas Rotherham College, he achieved the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music Grade 8 practical piano exam and the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music Grade 8 theory of music exam which were then a necessary prerequisite for entry to an undergraduate course in music which was subsequently taken at University. His teacher Sybil Pentith GRSM, LRAM, was strict but endearing, encouraging all that was good and embracing pianism with heart, instinct and mind whilst instilling and fostering a sense of discipline and purpose.
Studying piano, voice and organ in addition to academic aspects of music, Michael gained a Leeds University Bachelor degree in music. After graduating with his first degree and later gaining professional experience over many years, he was awarded a Fellowship in research by thesis from the London College of Music at the University of West London – a postgraduate standard diploma and internationally recognised qualification. Michael also studied further postgraduate work in music including success with both a Master and Doctoral degree as well as a number of other diplomas in various music subjects.
As continuing professional development, Michael achieved the DipABRSM in piano performance – a recital diploma from The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music which is respected and recognised the world over. Also, the ALCM (Recital) piano performance diploma was achieved which is recognised internationally and in the UK.
Examinations are available for those who require them and are held in the tutor's home teaching room. Several examiners have visited over time; one such examiner is conductor and composer Tim Knight.
Tim Knight is a composer of International repute, his music has won major composition prizes and awards and has been performed on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Local Radio. His music is widely in print and also performed and recorded extensively both in the UK and abroad.
Tim has written many splendid pieces of music; one such example being his composition entitled ‘Elegy for an English Summer' performed and recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. He is leader and conductor of several eminent choirs and choral groups giving regular concerts throughout the UK and abroad in both secular concert halls and other venues such as cathedrals, often deputizing for regular cathedral choirs etc. Tim is also well known and recognized for his choral and conducting skills, seminars and tutorials upon the subject of choir promotion, survival, revitalizing and training. He is also Principal of the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama in Leeds.
Tim Knight writes: “The examination centre held at Dr Spacie's home is without doubt one of the most efficient and well prepared that I have come across; everything from pre-visit schedules and students' selections right through to the actual exams is dealt with in a superbly professional manner which makes my work as an examiner so much easier and pleasant.
The exam sessions held at Dr Spacie's which I have attended are always interesting in the widely diverse set of candidates, both in terms of age groups and also musical styles. Exam sessions go smoothly because of the excellent preparation of timetable and materials that an examiner needs. The candidates are always well prepared and at the usual high standards that I have come to expect from Dr Spacie, reflected in the excellent results they receive.
All the pupils that I have examined have been well prepared with their piano pieces or vocal songs and other examination sections, and moreover with an obvious sense of musicianship; so many students these days appear prepared only in the actual notes that they play or sing, many times in a faultlessly accurate but somewhat mechanical way. Dr Spacie's pupils have that additional something (indefinable but immediately noticeable) that is revealed in stylistically and musically aware performances; this is an obvious reflection of the way they have been taught, and that in turn shows me that their teacher must have not only a great depth of knowledge of the subject area but also the ability to impart that to a wide range of age groups.”
Tim Knight (Examiner)
Below are testimonials from some students, who under the tutelage of Dr Michael Spacie, have significantly progressed through the practical graded examination system, most commencing as absolute beginners. Some students have also been successful beyond Grade 8 with diplomas. Most have studied theory of music in-depth taking Trinity Guildhall examinations. Absolute beginners are always welcome to join the teaching practice and discover their musical potential.

Mike is an excellent tutor. He's patient, insightful and will settle for nothing less than perfection. In April 1997 I began lessons with Mike when I was just seven as an absolute beginner. His tuition has supported me through all of my piano practical Grades 1-8 and Piano Associate Performing Diploma as well as music theory up to and including Grade 8. This proved to be an excellent foundation for further study of music at Leeds University; not only had Mike taught me to play the piano but he had shown me how to be a musician, demonstrating that music is about far more than just playing the notes on the page in the right order and at the right time. Mike's teaching experience and knowledge is vast and as a result Mike is able to tailor tuition to fit you, your interests, your ability and to help you achieve your aspirations whatever they might be. I cannot recommend Mike highly enough.
Thinking about further study in higher education?
If you are considering taking your music education further, the leap from instrumental lessons to a university environment can be a scary prospect. Relocation to an unknown city is often involved, you are thrust into an alien educational environment and then there is the consideration of tuition fees and cost of living. It is important to really question what you hope to achieve from higher education, whether that simply be personal development or improved job prospects.
I can say from personal experience that studying music at university was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I had the opportunity to explore all aspects of music, for example, music in history and culture, harmony, counterpoint, composition, analysis, performance, aesthetics, acoustics and music psychology.
However, it is important if you are considering further study that you seriously consider the following points:
- What do you hope to get from further study: is this realistic?
- What career paths does further study open? A degree is not always the end of the road.
- When exploring possible university options there is often a focus on you having to demonstrate your abilities in order to get a place, but you shouldn't be afraid to ask what they can offer you. Examine their module options (every university/music college will be different and will have a different research focus). Is what's on offer interesting to you? What lecturers work there? What is their personal field of study? What level of teaching are you going to receive for your money? What career and personal development services can they offer?
If you are considering going on to study classical music in higher education then you have to do it for the love of it. You will be doing it for a long time and it will be very hard work so you have to be passionate about what you are doing; the rewards however, will be huge. You will meet lots of new people with similar interests, make useful contacts for future work opportunities and develop skills that employers find indispensable.

I have been coming for lessons since February 2002 and from day one I knew this was a welcoming, friendly and enjoyable environment which makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Mike's delivery of teaching is of the highest standard and can adapt around specific music requirements; for example, I started playing classical music and now with new skills, I play popular music alongside classical studies. I have also been successful with an Associate Performance Diploma Piano exam. I would recommend Mike to anybody!
Regarding my success with exams, I use a process called ‘The Six Ps': this would be my advice to anybody taking a practical exam. If you follow these basic steps, hopefully you should succeed every time you take an exam:-
Before the exam:
Practice - become ‘warmed up' to familiarise yourself with the structure of the pieces and the harmonies within.
Polish - make sure the pieces are of a high standard and contain lots of dynamics, interpretative points and technical elements to gain extra marks.
Prepare - on the day of the exam always try and do things which are not as stressful and have a ‘chilled out' day, this just saves your mind for the exam, so you can concentrate fully on that. During the day, have a run through of the pieces, but never any real practise at the last minute, and prepare yourself with what you need for the exam. Always set off early to the exam so you are there ready. Before the exam, try to be profoundly silent so you can be fully focused for when you step inside the examination room. Always make sure you are ready for the exam by having your pieces ready before you set off.
Present - make appearance look respectable as well as your pieces as these two things will make you stand out from other candidates. Once you know how to approach exams you start to feel more comfortable and understand the process, that's why it is important to be focussed as there is the possibility of being too complacent.
During the exam:
Persevere - if you make a mistake, stay calm and relaxed and carry on from where you can pick it back up.
After the exam:
Pleased - if you follow these steps you should hopefully be happy with the overall outcome of the exam and of course pass the exam to a high level with a good mark.

I simply cannot recommend Mike highly enough. Since having lessons with him my piano playing has improved beyond all recognition. Not only does he instil belief and confidence, but he also opens up the piano and takes music way beyond what is written on the score, focusing on technique and musicianship to transform a piece into a performance. He is highly experienced and I have personal experience of his competence teaching at all levels from beginner to advanced. He is attentive to every note played, and I firmly believe that anyone who takes lessons with him will find themselves playing piano better than they ever believed they could.

I was introduced to music at school and thoroughly enjoyed singing all different kinds of music up to my mid 20s. At this point I had to start earning a living, then I got married and there were children. Singing had to take a back seat to these new responsibilities and I didn’t really sing again for another 30 years. Then as a complete surprise my wife arranged a series of singing lessons for me. I must admit that at first I found the prospect of starting to sing again incredibly intimidating. However, from the first minute of the first lesson with Dr. Spacie I realized what I had been missing for the last 30 years. My voice had changed but that was just part of the fun of beginning to pick up the old skills. Michael is brilliant at making you feel relaxed right from the start, in helping you discover the fun of singing and in helping you to develop the full potential of your voice. I should have done this years’ ago.

I was a pupil of Dr Spacie from March 2004 to February 2010 and his teaching was always to the highest professional standards. I progressed from novice to a competent and confident vocalist under his tuition. He helped me attain standards of which I did not think I was capable e.g. Associate and Licentiate Performance Diplomas in solo singing. I have no hesitation in recommending him to any serious student of music and singing. I would like to take this opportunity to give him my most sincere thanks for the enjoyable journey.

I had piano lessons at school but never took it much further, although I've always enjoyed playing. After retirement I decided to start learning again, looking for someone with the patience to teach a senior citizen. I had no problems with Mike - he is always supportive and encouraging, and he took me through to pass the Grade 7 piano exam with an excellent standard - more than I ever expected. Now I enjoy my retirement playing my favourite classics. Thanks Mike!

Mike is a fabulous teacher and was an inspiration to me to move towards taking the Grade 8 practical piano exam which I passed with great success. I took singing lessons with Dr Michael Spacie from September 2006 to July 2010 and during this time I achieved graded singing exams and music theory exams including passing Trinity Guildhall Grade 7 Theory of Music with Merit. I had always been interested in music and singing since I was young and after completing music A-levels at college I decided it was the right time to take up singing lessons as it is something I really enjoyed doing. I progressed significantly and thus successfully passed my Performer Associate Diploma exam in solo singing. I really enjoyed going to my lessons and got much enjoyment from them. Dr Michael Spacie is an excellent tutor and always brought a friendly atmosphere to each lesson. I really enjoyed my tuition from him.
I would promote the idea for anyone taking singing or piano lessons with Dr Michael Spacie to take exams. I feel that the achievement can make you feel proud and is really rewarding. It also makes you feel competent and ambitious to then go on and achieve more. Dr Michael Spacie is a really good tutor who has helped me to develop my confidence as an individual and has helped me to achieve aspirations through support and guidance.
